Cooking with Tea for the Holidays

One of the wonderful things about tea is that it is quite versatile. This means it can simply be enjoyed many different ways. Tea doesn’t have to be just for drinking! Another popular way to use tea is as an ingredient to cook with. Cooking with tea allows for more unique flavours in dishes and it doesn’t require a lot of work. In fact, most of the time you may find that tea actually will enhance a recipe you have.

There are various methods when it comes to infusing recipes with tea. Here are a few examples:

Replace water or broth in a recipe for tea.

Infuse butter with tea and use that in recipes that call for butter.

Finely chop up tea leaves directly in the recipe.

If you’re looking to try something new for your menu during the holidays, wow your guests with a little extra tea flavour! Another great thing about cooking with tea is that most of the time, those who don’t typically enjoy a cuppa, will love consuming tea this way…if they even notice! ;)

Here is a tea infused gravy recipe that is perfect to get you started on your cooking with tea journey. In this recipe, the tea we are using is Mazawattee Everyday Tea, which is a blend of African and Indonesian black teas. Normally, this recipe would call for water, but using this tea instead will add a rich taste to the gravy. This recipe is also vegetarian.

This recipe will make 1 cup, and can be ready in just 20 minutes.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon onions, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1½ tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup Mazawattee Everyday Tea, steeped*


Directions:

  1. In a small pot on medium heat, melt the butter and sauté the onions and garlic.
  2. Stir in the soy sauce, and steeped tea. *To prepare the tea for the gravy, you want to create a bold steep so that it will shine through the recipe. To do so, steep one tea bag in ½ cup of boiled water for 5 minutes.
  3. Slowly add in the flour. Be sure to stir constantly to avoid clumps. This ingredient will help thicken the gravy.
  4. When the desired thickness is reached, add salt and pepper to taste and remove from heat.
